Thinking about upgrading my system to run FSX. I know from the show that X does not require the latest and greatest card so my question is which would be better the Nvidia 8800 or 9800?

9800 GTX is what I have always heard is the best.

It should be mentioned that link to Tom's is out of date, they have a newer one for FSX for Q3/2008 here: http://www.tomshardw...Simulator-X-SP2,785.html (However, this one is still a year old, but it is the most up to date one yet.)

I bought a 9800GTX+ for my system, and I can attest it runs like a dream. But the only difference in a 9800GTX and a 9800GTX+ is a slightly higher clock speed. So if you're on a budget go with the 9800GTX.

Oh sure Eric, you had to bring that up...

Haha!

Do you think the 9800GTX would be a good upgrade for my 8800GT? Not to jack the thread...

Personally? I don't think so. The 8800 is a great card. If you look at this article: http://en.wikipedia....88xxx.29_series

The number you're really looking at is the "Core Config". That means the number of pixels the card can process in a pass (or the ratio of pixels something rather, I don't know. The higher the better :P ). Your 8800GT has 112:56:16, and the 9800GTX has 128:64:16. You will hardly notice a difference in gaming.

Credit to Ben Supnik for telling me about that article and what to look for.

Next question:

Newegg has the 9800GT with 1 gig ram and the 9800GTX+ with 1 gig of ram, but the GTX+ is only made by Sparkle. Should I get the GT with a gig by a reputable company instead?

I really like this one: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814125286

You know, I avoided the "Sparkle" card. I've never heard of them, I got a 512MB PNY. But that is just a personal choice.

My Card is PNY and personally i would never get PNY again, the driver disk has never worked, just makes a loud noise in the drive + the online support is rubbish

PNY has the coolest looking Boxes!?!

Seriously, I have EVGA stuff and I can attest they are a pretty good company as far as graphics cards go, also MSI make a good product.

I have an MSI GTX 280 and it's pretty boss.

I'd like to suggest the Radeon HD4770
It's cheap (under 100$) has great performance for it's price, runs quiet and cool and has great overclocking potential.
It's energy efficient too as it doesn't draw a lot of power even at full load.

Review here..
http://www.hardocp.c...adeon_hd_4770/1
They compare it to the Geforce GTS 250 (which is rebranded 9800GTX+)

Check out the full spec details here..
